Hearts of palm calamari, a vegan recipe that will blow your mind! It has a fishy flavor and is made with 8 ingredients in 20 minutes.

Photo of a bowl of hearts of palm calamari

I couldn't believe it when I first tried these hearts of palm calamari. Their flavor is so close to the original recipe I really thought I was eating calamari! However, it is a completely vegan recipe, so rest assured you'll enjoy a 100% cruelty-free meal!

I don't miss eating seafood at all, but I sometimes do miss flavors that I can't no longer access because of my vegan diet. When I was younger my mom used to make calamari all the time, so I decided to try this recipe and I absolutely love it!

Besides, it's super easy to prepare and made with ingredients you can easily find at any grocery store. It is perfect to enjoy as an appetizer before lunch or for serving it during a dinner with friends.

Hearts of palm calamari, a delicious and simple recipe that requires only 8 ingredients and just 20 minutes of your time. I promise you will absolutely love it!

What are hearts of palm?

Hearts of palm are a vegetable that comes from the inner core of some palm trees. They taste like a mix of white asparagus and artichokes, but with a more delicate flavor and a crunchier texture.

How long will it keep?

It will last for quite some time if stored properly, so remember to keep the leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for 3-5 days.

How to serve these hearts of palm calamari

Although I love to serve them with sauces like vegan tartar sauce vegan aioli or homemade marinara sauce, you can also eat them with vegan mayo or any other sauce you'd like!

Ingredients

  • ½ nori sheet or 1 tablespoon nori flakes, optional
  • 2 14-ounce cans hearts of palm, drained
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour, gluten-free if needed
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Oil for frying
  • 1 lemon cut into wedges, optional

Instructions

  • Blend the nori sheet in a powerful blender until you get nori flakes. You can also finely chop the nori sheet with a knife or use store-bought nori flakes. Set aside.
  • Cut the hearts of palm into ½ inch pieces (about 1 cm), rings separated. Set aside.
  • In a large zip lock bag, add the nori flakes, flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. You could also mix them in a bowl, but the bag method is more convenient.
  • Incorporate the hearts of palm and shake around to make sure everything is coated in the seasoned flour. You can make this in one or several batches, depending on the size of your bag. Sift the rings to get rid of any extra flour. You can also shake off the excess.
  • Cover the bottom of a skillet with about ยผ inch of oil (about ยฝ cm). When the oil is hot, slip the rings in the hot oil and cook for about 2 minutes over high heat, turning the pieces until they’re lightly golden all over. You may need to do this in batches so your skillet isn't too crowded.
  • Remove to a colander to drain and serve immediately with some lemon wedges.
  • Keep the leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Notes

  • Nori flakes are optional, but they will make your hearts of palm taste like real calamari.
  • Use gluten-free flour if needed.
  • Any type of oil will do.
  • Feel free to add any spices or herbs you want.
  • Nutritional info has been calculated using ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil and 2 tablespoon of lemon juice.
