Fried cauliflower, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. A delicious and flavorful appetizer or side dish ready in just 20 minutes.

Photo of a bowl of fried cauliflower

One of the most common ways of cooking cauliflower is in the oven. The truth is it really turns out delicious, but if you'd like to try a different thing, I suggest you start with this fried cauliflower!

This is one of the best cauliflower recipes I've ever tried - it gives the cauliflower a wonderfully good flavor and an amazingly crispy texture. You can serve it as a side dish or even as an appetizer!

How to make fried cauliflower

  • Mix the plant milk and vinegar in a jar or bowl until well combined. Let the mixture rest at room temperature for at least 5 minutes.
  • Wash and cut the cauliflower head into bite-sized pieces or florets.
  • Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl until well combined.
  • Add the plant milk and vinegar mixture to the large bowl and stir again.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet until it reaches 350°F (180°C).
  • Dip each floret into the batter and coat evenly. Shake off the excess and fry the florets for 3-5 minutes.
  • Drain the pieces on a wire or paper towels.
  • Serve your fried cauliflower immediately.

Fried cauliflower ingredients and tips

  • Unsweetened plant milk: any type of unsweetened plant milk will work. However, to make this fried cauliflower recipe, I used soy milk.
  • Apple cider vinegar: you could also use white vinegar or lemon juice instead.
  • Cauliflower.
  • All-purpose flour: feel free to use any other type of flour.
  • Cornstarch.
  • Baking powder.
  • Garlic powder.
  • Onion powder.
  • Salt: I used iodized salt, but any kind of salt will do.
  • Ground black pepper: fresh ground black pepper tastes amazing. However, I find the store-bought version more convenient and also easier to measure with a teaspoon.
  • Oil: I used canola oil, but this recipe will work with any type of oil.
  • Feel free to serve your fried cauliflower recipe with vegan protein like baked tofu, seitan, tempeh, or even fried tofu. You can also serve it with your favorite sauce.

How to fry cauliflower

Just like any other vegetable, frying cauliflower is very easy. You just need to heat a good amount of oil into a skillet and then add the cauliflower until it's cooked and crispy. I hope you enjoy your fried cauliflower recipe!

Instructions

  • Mix the plant milk and vinegar in a jar or bowl until well combined. Let the mixture rest at room temperature for at least 5 minutes. After this time, the milk will thicken and curdle.
  • Wash and cut the cauliflower head into bite-sized pieces or florets.
  • Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl (flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper) until well combined.
  • Add the milk and vinegar mixture to the large bowl and stir again. Set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet until it reaches 350°F (180°C).
  • Dip each floret into the batter and coat evenly. Shake off the excess and fry the florets for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Drain the pieces on a wire or paper towels. Let them cool for at least 5 minutes before serving.
  • Serve your fried cauliflower recipe immediately with vegan protein like baked tofu, seitan, tempeh, or even fried tofu. You can also serve it with your favorite sauce.
  • Keep the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • Feel free to use any type of unsweetened plant milk.
  • You can also use any kind of flour, spice, herb, or oil to make this fried cauliflower.
  • Apple cider vinegar can be replaced with white vinegar or lemon juice.
  • For a lighter version of this fried cauliflower recipe, cook your cauliflower in the air fryer (I don’t add any oil) for 10 to 15 minutes or until it is cooked. Cooking time may vary depending on how soft you want your cauliflower to be.

This was an amazing cauliflower recipe, enjoyed by non-vegans and vegans alike. Even my 5 year old loved it. I used it to make tacos, filled with cabbage, beans, cilantro and chipotle dressing. Restaurant quality!
